2011 Season preview

This July, Appalachian State University presents the 27th season of An Appalachian Summer Festival. Performances include k.d. lang, The Manhattan Transfer, African Children's Choir, Chita Rivera and Ben Vereen, the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, the Eastern Festival Orchestra, and the return of the outdoor fireworks concert with Dierks Bentley. Young musicians from across North Carolina were invited to compete in the inaugural year of the Rosen-Schaffel Young Artist Competition, a new initiative co-presented by An Appalachian Summer Festival and the Hayes School of Music.
Adam Walls' "Surprise" wins 25th Rosen Award First Place

Adam Walls, from Laurinburg, NC, was announced as the First Place Award winner of the 25th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition for his steel and iron sculpture Surprise. The announcement was made by juror Mel Chin at the conclusion of the annual Sculpture Walk on July 23, 2011.

Arnold and Muriel Rosen’s generosity, vision and love for the arts led to the inception of An Appalachian Summer Festival in 1984, the university’s highly regarded annual summer festival of the performing and visual arts. The Rosens’ daughter Nancy Schaffel and her husband, Neil, continue to share their deep relationship to the arts, the High Country and support of the festival through a new competition.
