DESCRIPTION:Engage with visiting artists and fellow arts advocates\, enjoy live music and refreshments\, and discover the exciting exhibitions showcased across six galleries by local\, regional\, national and international artists. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Community Contours in the Southern Appalachian Mountains: Jill Pelto\n \n \n \n \n \n June 5 – November 7\, 2026Mayer Gallery \nJill Pelto’s experience as an artist and climate scientist shapes her paintings\, which incorporate environmental narratives and science data. To start untangling the complexities of local and global trends\, she visualizes connections between environmental change and human action. Through color\, pattern\, and perspective\, her goal is to provide unexpected opportunities for people to personally engage science through observation\, reflection\, and dialogue.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Sofie Hecht\, Untitled (Cows) \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Stitching the Natural World: Nancy Hershberger\n \n \n \n \n \n June 5 – November 21\, 2026Bickers Gallery \nAs an art quilter\, Nancy Herschberger’s practice is rooted in a deep reverence for materials and a passion for the landscape. Drawn to the tactile nature of fabric\, where each stitch and layer holds the possibility of evoking emotion and memory\, she is captivated by the subtle interplay of light and shadow\, the silent language of color\, and the narratives hidden in ordinary moments. Working with textiles allows Herschberger to bridge tradition and innovation\, transforming familiar fibers into visual narratives that invite contemplation and connection. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Doc Watson at Deep Gap\, N.C.\, 1962\, by John Cohen \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Accommodations\nApp State is committed to providing an inclusive experience for individuals with disabilities. SUMMARY:Merz Trio
DESCRIPTION:A Classic Concert Series Event\nPresenting Sponsorship provided by Bonnie and Jamie Schaefer\, Christine Petti\, and Neil and Nancy SchaffelPrincipal Sponsorship provided by App State Campus Store\, Broyhill Family Foundation\, Catsman Foundation\, and Mast General Store \n \n \n \n \n \n Brigid Coleridge\, ViolinJulia Yang\, CelloAmy Yang\, Piano \nHailed as “entrancing” (BBC Music Magazine) and “artists in the deepest sense of the word” (CutCommon)\, Merz Trio\, winners of the Naumburg\, Concert Artists Guild\, Fischoff and Chesapeake Competitions\, and recipients of a Salon de Virtuosi Career Grant\, have been lauded for their “stunning virtuosity… fresh and surprising interpretations” (Reading Eagle)\, and “perfection of intonation and ensemble” (Hudson Review). Merz Trio are passionately committed to reshaping the narrative of classical music through vibrantly dynamic programming and wide-ranging interdisciplinary collaboration. Their narrative programming style juxtaposes classical standards\, new music\, and their own arrangements of familiar and forgotten works\, fluidly interwoven and guided with speaking from the Trio’s members. \nPROGRAMClara’s Circle \nThis program traces friendship through the steps of Clara Wieck Schumann\, from 1857-1859\, by way of flowers. It reflects sentiments from her Blumentagebuch – her diary of pressed flowers – in which Clara left dedications to meaningful people and moments in her life. This precious book accompanied her as she toured throughout Europe and served as a record of relationships\, mourning and memory. Moving amongst Clara’s floral meditations\, we explore floriography in its romantic heyday and delight in the coded and the unspoken. With Clara\, we visit Robert\, Beethoven and Brahms\, and bring in a musical friend of our own\, Chris Rogerson (b. 1988). In River Songs\, Rogerson recalls family trips to Stehekin\, WA\, capturing its distinct topography and sense of nostalgia. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tickets\nContact theschaefercenter@appstate.edu\, call 828-262-4046\, visit the box office at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts\, or purchase online. \n  \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n $45 Standard$40 App State Faculty/Staff$20 student/child \nAll tickets include NC sales tax.Online sales are subject to ticket fees. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Buy Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events. Born and raised in rural Minnesota\, Spiczka became captivated by metal at an early age working in his family’s welding shop. Though he briefly studied art and philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St Peter\, Minnesota\, his true education has come from nature\, the example of past sculptors\, and the craftsmanship taught to him by his father.  Spiczka’s award-winning sculptures have been exhibited internationally – including at the Seolbong International Sculpture Park in Icheon\, South Korea\, the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln\, Massachusetts\, and the Franconia Sculpture Park in Taylors Fall\, Minnesota. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n A special thanks to the Rosen family\n \n \n \n \n \n Martin & Doris Rosen\nVision\, generosity\, and a pursuit of excellence are some of the many qualities that characterized the lives of Martin and Doris Rosen. From their years devoted to building a successful business\, to their lives after retirement\, revolving around family\, philanthropy\, and a commitment to the arts\, this exceptional couple left an indelible mark on the communities in which they lived and worked. \nThanks to the continuing generosity of the Rosen Family\, Martin and Doris’s legacy of support for quality visual arts programming has been continued by their children\, and enables this beloved exhibition program to continue to develop and flourish. In July 1997\, the Rosens donated Hephaestus\, a large commissioned sculpture by Bruce White\, to Appalachian State’s Permanent Collection\, and it adorns the Rivers Street frontage area of the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts to this day. \nOn the occasion of the Rosens’ 50th wedding anniversary in October 1999\, their children established the Martin and Doris Rosen Scholarship to assist rising junior or senior art majors at Appalachian State. Tireless supporters of the arts\, the Rosen Family has given so much of themselves over the years to ensure that the arts remain a strong foundation of campus and community life in the High Country. We wish to extend to them our deepest appreciation.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\nParking can be challenging\, particularly for sold-out events.
